Under the Frog is British-born Hungarian writer Tibor Fischer 's debut novel, it was published in The book was a winner of the Betty Trask Award and was the first debut novel to be shortlisted for the Booker Prize. The novel is a black comedy set in Hungary in the years immediately following the end of World War II and culminates in the uprising. This book’s strange title derives from an old Hungarian saying of “under a frog’s arse [and down a coal mine.]”. That’s the position the protagonist, Gyuri Fischer, feels himself to be in during the course of the book, running from end of the Second World War through the Hungarian Uprising of Tibor Fischer’s Under The Frog, ends with a scared, beaten-down, young man treading through the cold snow behind an injured countryman.
