We meet Michael, a young Maori man who declares to his family that he is homosexual. The Uncle's Story () is a mid-career novel from Witi Ihimaera, New Zealand's best-known Māori author because of the popularity of The Whale Rider () which was made into a film. (See my review of the novella). He has sixteen novels to his credit, including Bulibasha () which I reviewed here. Witi Ihimaera was the first Maori to publish both a book of short stories and a novel, and has published many notable novels and collections of short stories. Described by Metro magazine as ‘Part oracle, part memoralist,’ and ‘an inspired voice, weaving many stories together’, Ihimaera has also written for stage and screen, edited books.
